Rubbish & Recycling update
The council have confirmed that holiday lets should not be using their regular household kerbside collection services. Even if you are paying council tax on your holiday let, they still view any waste generated as commercial waste and can refuse to collect it.
Here's what they say in full: https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/businesswaste
To remain compliant and ensure continuity of collections, holiday lets should make arrangements for a commercial waste collection. The council does offer this service, with a discount for council tax-rated properties (please bear in mind that the council plans to double council tax for 'second homes', so it will likely be more economical overall to switch to business rates). Private companies also offer this service and are competitively priced.

Private commercial waste collection services
There are private companies who specialise in the removal of waste and recycling from holiday lets. Several of our property owners are already using Cornwall Waste Care to facilitate this, so we reached out to them for some information about their services:
- Collections on your changeover day - this ends the issue of incoming guests arriving to bins full of outgoing guest's rubbish.
- Weekly collection if guests are staying for longer periods, to prevent accumulation.
- Registered Upper Tier Waste Carrier and Dealer with the Environment Agency.
- All waste goes, via depots, to the Cornwall Energy Centre (CERC) where it is burnt, with Zero Emissions and the heat is turned into electricity. The residue ash is also recycled to be a base aggregate for new roads.
- They operate a zero to landfill policy.
- Recycling items are recycled in the UK using SUEZ.
Charges:
- Charges are based upon the number of people who are able to sleep at the property, starting at £15 per collection for a sleeps 2-4.
- Unlimited bag numbers per collection.
- Branded yellow refuse bags for general waste are provided free of charge.
Branded clear refuse bags for recycling are provided free of charge. - Invoices for collections are monthly in arrears via email.
- Lockable branded bins can be provided for an additional cost. These are 240L in size and £70 plus VAT.
